breast veins

Why Are My Breast Veins So Visible and How Can I Hide Them?

Some women will start to notice blue veins appearing on their breasts at some point in their lives. This condition is not viewed as aesthetically pleasing, and they will make a beeline to their plastic surgeon’s office for a consultation.

The good news is that the appearance of blue breast veins is generally not considered to be a dangerous medical condition. They may not look very good, but they are entirely harmless. However, in rare cases, visible breast veins could indicate cirrhosis of the liver, enlarged abdomen, and fluid accumulation in the abdomen.

Fortunately, it’s possible to get rid of, or at the very least cover up the veins that show through the breasts of some women. We’re going to look at what causes blue breast veins and what can be done to reduce their overall appearance.

What Causes Large Breast Veins and Why Are They So Visible?

There are a wide variety of factors that could cause blue breast veins to appear gradually. The two leading causes of blue breast veins are age and hormonal changes in the body, but there are many others:

Vigorous exercise – Regular and vigorous activity can cause the appearance of veins throughout the body. In women, it shows up prominently in the upper to middle breast area. Exercise increases blood flow throughout the body which in turn can cause veins to bulge outwards. You most often see this in the arms and legs of bodybuilders.

Genetics – If your mom and grandma had visible veins, there’s a good chance you might as well. Genetics can play a huge part in determining how, when, and where blue veins show up. Most often it’s a combination of age and genetics that results in the appearance of blue veins.

Pregnancy – Women who are currently or were recently pregnant often see blue veins appear as their breasts enlarge in preparation for breastfeeding the child. It’s advised that any corrective surgeries be postponed until after the baby has been born.

Large Breast Implants – Some women get breast implants that are extremely large, which stretch the chest cavity and pockets in an unnatural way that can cause the appearance of veins to form.

Why Are Breast Veins Blue?

When looking down at your breasts, arms, legs, or any other part of your body, it’s common to see blue veins running through your skin. But we thought blood was red, so why do our veins appear blue?

No, it’s not that old rumor that blood is actually blue until it comes in contact with oxygen, our blood is always red. Oxygenated blood is typically bright red, while blood that has lost its oxygen will appear a darker red, but our blood never has a blue color to it.

The veins in our body are actually mostly transparent, so they appear as the color of the blood flowing through them. Base on that, you would assume that our veins would appear red, but when looking at them through your skin, they appear blue.

It’s the skin that causes the color change.

The layer of skin and fat that lays overtop of the visible veins helps to absorb the red light being reflected back into our eyes. Blue light cannot penetrate the skin as well as the red light, which is why the veins close to the skin’s surface will appear blue.

Why Does My Breast Skin Appear See Through?

If you’ve noticed that the veins in your breasts, or in other areas of your body, have become more pronounced over the years, it could be because your skin appears more transparent.

Our bodies are slowly changing as we age and one of the things that happens as we age is that our cells begin to break down and don’t act the same way that they once did when we were younger.

You may have always had more pronounced veins in your chest, but your skin may start to lose melanin as you age. Melanin is the substance in your body that produces the pigment in your skin (amongst other areas). If your body lacks melanin, your skin will appear more see through or transparent compared to others that have more melanin.

There are a variety of reason you may lose melanin over time, but the biggest reason is age. As you get older your body loses the ability to produce melanin, which is why older folks tend to have thinner skin, or you can see through their skin a lot easier.

There are things that you can do to help reduce the effects of low melanin, but it’s important to talk with your doctor to ensure that nothing more serious is going on.

When it comes to thin skin around the breasts, and visible blue veins, there are a number of treatments and procedures that can be done to help fix them.

How to Fix Blue Veiny Breasts

There are many options to choose from when trying to remove or reduce the appearance of veins.

Which option the surgeon decides will depend on the severity of the condition. Other factors could include your personal preference of therapy, availability, previous health history, and budget.

The two main therapies are laser treatments and sclerotherapy. Some doctors have found success using fat to cover up the appearance of the veins, although the degree of success would be based upon how big the veins area.

Lasers – If veins are below a certain size, a plastic surgeon can use lasers to shrink down the vessels. The veins will then fade and be reduced permanently. If the veins are above a certain size, then laser therapy probably won’t help out. It could take several appointments before satisfactory results are achieved.

Sclerotherapy – A needle containing a solution is injected into the vein. After a while, the vein will collapse and be absorbed into the body. Depending on the severity of the veins, one or more sessions may be required. There is no recovery time, and this procedure is considered to be safe, quick, and effective.

Fat & Fillers – Some plastic surgeons will use your body fat in an attempt to mask the veins. They will add fat or a filler around the affected areas to disguise the veins. As the old saying goes, Your Mileage May Vary with this procedure. Ask your surgeon if this is something they would recommend based on your particular case.

Au Natural – There are many websites and women’s magazines that tout “all natural” cures to the problem of blue breast veins. The reality is that none of them work very well. Or, if they do appear to work, it’s often on a case-by-case basis.

There are countless other “remedies” such as applying a fake tan to the breasts or adding Vitamin K moisturizer daily. While these can work in a limited scope, it’s going to be an ongoing maintenance battle to keep the veins hidden from view.

In some cases, a well-supported bra can help lessen the appearance of blue veins. Breasts that aren’t supported have increased blood flow due to gravitational pull. If the breasts are supported via a bra, blood flow will be regulated, and some unsightly breast veins could disappear on their own.

Only a qualified plastic surgeon can diagnose and offer a viable solution that will help remove or at the very least dramatically reduce the appearance of blue breast veins.

Beware of Vampire Breast Lifts! They Are Too Good To Be True

Vampire Breast Lift – What is It? And Are They Too Good to Be True?

A non-invasive breast lift that takes just 15 minutes with little-to-no recovery time sounds like it could the future of breast enhancement – but is it too good to be true? Dr. Adams, an international authority on breast augmentation, notes that there is no science or data behind vampire breast lifts. So should the widespread vampire trend stay in pop culture and out of cosmetic procedures? Let’s take a look.

Watch Dr. Adams pick a part vampire breast lifts in the No Spin News video below.

What is a Vampire Breast Lift

Vampire breast lifts get their name from the iconic blood-sucking characters from folk tales to hit T.V. shows because, like their namesakes, the treatments involve sucking out a patient’s blood.

During a vampire breast lift, a doctor will draw your blood and extract platelet-rich plasma (PRP) through a process known as centrifugation or spinning. This process allows the doctor to separate the blood plasma from the other blood cells.

A vampire breast lift only requires the use of the platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, and not the rest of the blood cells.

These platelets contain a high concentration of proteins, known as growth factors, which can theoretically help heal injuries quicker and rejuvenate the breast tissue to appear plumper and fuller.

Once the platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is separated from the blood, it is combined with dermal fillers and re-injected into the breasts with the intention of stimulating collagen production and blood flow. Allegedly, this leads to fuller, firmer breasts in just a few weeks.

Does a Vampire Breast Lift Work?

Vampire breast lifts claim to improve the overall appearance of the breasts by smoothing wrinkles, fixing inverted nipples, reducing the appearance of stretch marks and scar tissue, and lifting sagging skin. The treatment does not increase cup size.

Like other injectable cosmetic treatments, these types of procedures are temporary, and benefits are primarily superficial (smoothing wrinkles, for example). Vampire breast lifts are non-invasive injections; there is no part of the treatment that involves physically lifting or manipulating the breast tissue, although they may be able to give the appearance of more fullness or smoother skin and cleavage. They cannot, however, lift the breast.

Many plastic surgeons are skeptical at some of the claims made regarding vampire breast lifts. There is little to no scientific data to back up any of these claims made about helping to lift the breasts or make them appear fuller. At least nothing that directly correlates to the injection of PRP.

If you inject any sort of filler or liquid (like saline) into a woman’s breasts, you are going to notice them appearing fuller or slightly larger, however this is just because you are injecting more of a substance into the area, so of course when you add something under the skin it’s going to seem like an enhancement.

PRP treatments are typically used in orthopedic settings to help the healing process in ligaments, damaged joints, tendons, and muscles. PRP treatments in orthopedics has been studied and has been shown to help the healing process for these damaged areas, but with regards to breast lifts, there is no data suggesting that PRP treatments on their own can essentially mimic the effects of a surgical breast lift.

How Long Do the Results Last?

As we said, we don’t believe that there is enough science behind the vampire breast lift procedure to encourage our patients to seek it out, but some doctors claim that the effects can last for months, however we are skeptical of that.

Since it’s just an organic injectable you may notice some fullness and smoother skin in the first few days, but as your body begins to reabsorb those platelets, any effects you experienced will being to wane and you’re body will go back to normal.

The idea behind PRP therapy for breast lifts is that the platelets help to stimulate collagen production and blood flow to the area, which is supposed to help make the breasts appear fuller, however just using injectables is not going to give you anywhere near the effects that a surgical breast lift would give you.

Is a Vampire Breast Lift Safe? Are There Side Effects?

If you choose to try a vampire breast lift, it is very safe. This is a non-surgical procedure that draws your own blood, extracts the platelets from the blood, and reinjects it back into your body. There are no foreign materials or outside elements at play when undergoing PRP treatment.

As long as you’re not allergic to the material used in the syringes, then you should have no major allergic reactions or debilitating side effects.

The only side effects that you may experience are related to injections in general. You may notice some bruising or soreness near the injection sites as the need has to puncture the skin in order to inject the platelets. But since the organic material being injected into your body was produced by your own body, there should be no other side effects.

How Much Does a Vampire Breast Lift Cost?

While we do not perform vampire breast lift procedures in our office here at Dr. Adams Plastic Surgery, you can expect to pay between $1500 and $2000 depending on the office you visit and the location.

If It Sounds Too Good to Be True, It Probably Is

A fifteen-minute breast lift with no recovery time might seem like the best breast augmentation procedure on the market, but be sure to read the fine print. Data is scarce on this relatively new-to-market treatment, and reviews or before-and-after testimonials are rare.

Dr. Adams notes that vampire lifts are – at best – soft tissue fillers. Fillers can’t possibly lift breasts or make them larger. Therefore, they don’t work as a breast lift.

Critics of PRP therapy have argued that adding rich plasma does not equate to more healing power. The human body requires a precise balance of cells and nutrients for optimal function; adding too much platelet-rich plasma could disrupt that balance in useless or even harmful ways. Some skeptical of vampire breast lifts have also raised concerns about introducing additional growth factors into an area of the body that is already prone to developing cancer.

If you really want to get your perky breasts back, traditional breast lifts are the best option. Take a look at our before and after breast lift photos to see just how effective breast lifts are when performed by a renown plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation. Why Men Love Big Breasts: The Scientific Theories

Why Men Love Big Breasts: The Scientific Theories

If you are a woman wonderfully endowed with large breasts, you may have experienced conversations with males whose eyes tend to drift south of your face. Why do men find big breasts so attractive? What is it about large boobs that men find irresistible?

We’ll look at some theories that different scientists have come up with to explain this phenomenon.

Glandula Mammalia: What Exactly Are Boobs?

What many people call “boobs” are actually fat-filled mammary glands that produce milk. It is one of the main physical features that sets mammals apart from other animals (mammary is the technical term associated with breasts). Humans are also classified as mammals because both males and females have breasts.

However, the female breasts appear larger than males’ for a few reasons. First, females have more estrogen than males; estrogen is a hormone that promotes breast growth. Second, biological theorists say that female breasts evolved specifically to increase in size. The additional fatty tissue could be an adaptive feature designed to support breastfeeding and sexual purposes.

Men, Boobs, and Babies

Large Boobs and Fertility

Larger breasts may also signal increased fertility. This may or may not correlate with some cultures’ view of female body parts—such as the breasts and hips—as indicators of fertility and the capacity to sustain a healthy pregnancy. Since breasts grow larger during weight gain, in olden times, this may have meant that the woman was well-nourished, which would benefit both the potential father and offspring. It simply meant that she had access to food and resources.

Interestingly, this may still be true in the 21st century. But theories, including evolutionary ones, are still in the realm of speculation. Not all cultures view large breasts as necessarily attractive sexually, and preferences seem to vary.

Ability to Provide for their Babies

Another theory that may explain why men like large breasts has to do with how breastfeeding bonds the mother and her infant.

While large or small breasts have no bearing on the amount of milk a female body will produce after giving birth, larger breasts often are seen as a more ample food supply for the baby. And while this is merely a physical trait for the outside observer looking in, those without knowledge of how the female anatomy works, still believe that larger breasts will provide better.

Hormones

In a similar way, couples also bond more when breast stimulation is involved, thanks to the hormone and neuropeptide oxytocin. Oxytocin is otherwise known as the “love drug,” or “cuddle hormone,” and it plays a role in maternal as well as sexual bonding.

Our brains release oxytocin during sex. Humans are the only mammals who have sex face-to-face, so breasts are in full view during intercourse. So men, don’t be surprised by the fact that you and babies have this one thing in common: you both like breasts. But again, while this theory may have some truth to it, it’s not conclusive to say that hormones are the primary reason why men like big breasts or breasts in general.

Big is Beautiful – Media Portrayal of Women

Culture, exposure, and upbringing are a few factors that might have shaped a lot of men’s preference for big breasts. One of these factors could be the media. As a cultural artifact, the media pegs women with larger breasts as more desirable.

With constant exposure, we learn at a young age that bigger breasts are “sexualized.” For some men, it could be how they were taught to perceive the female figure. Besides learned fondness, different breast sizes – not just large ones – may have varying effects on the male brain as hormones like oxytocin may affect everyone differently. It certainly doesn’t affect men the way it does women.

While breast sizes have differed over time, in the United States the average bra size is 34DD. Men in the US may find this average attractive since it’s larger than the former average two decades ago (size 34B). Apart from size, eye-catching breasts may also be more firm and perky, as saggy breasts may be associated with less vitality.

Overall Physical Appearance

The scientific ideas mentioned above, in regards to why men love large boobs, may explain some of what’s going on in their minds, but the truth of the matter is, men can be very physical beings, for better or worse.

Men, more than women, tend to be attracted to a person through their physical appearance when first starting out a relationship. This is the thing that draws a man to a woman and the thing that catches their eye. If the physical attraction is there it may lead to a deeper level of attraction as the relationship continues.

Men tend to find women with larger breasts more physically attractive for a number of reasons. As stated above, the media portrays larger women as being more beautiful. Larger breasts are more aesthetically pleasing to some men and can make a woman appear more feminine than smaller breasts. Larger breasts can make a woman more confident in herself, which can be more attractive to men as well.

Confidence is very attractive to men, and women, so while the larger breasts may seem like the reason men are more attracted to a women with large breasts, it could also be because that women is more confident in herself because of the way she looks.

Do Men Prefer Bigger Boobs Over Smaller Ones?

Almost everyone loves larger boobs. Studies have shown that around 90% of men prefer breasts that are a size or two larger than the standard size but has also shown that men just love breasts.

Men find all types of breasts attractive whether they are round, teardrop, perky, or other shapes. So regardless of your breast size, there are men out there that love all types of breasts. And if you’re not comfortable with the current size of your breasts, you should not be making changes to your body because of what men think.

Instead, any changes you make to your body should be because you want them. Larger breasts can help boost your self-esteem and make you more confident, which in turn will also make you more attractive to a partner.

Are There Health Benefits to Naturally Large Breasts?

Outside of large breasts being more attractive to men, there are some health benefits that come along with having bigger boobs.

You may actually sleep a little better with larger breasts, but not for the reasons you think. Because women with larger breasts may have a hard time sleeping, they require more support in order to keep things balanced. This extra support may actually help the rest of your body relax and sleep well, thus giving you a better night’s sleep.

Boosted self-confidence can come with larger breasts, as we’ve mentioned before. This self confidence boost can impact your mental health as well as your physical health. However, depending on your body type, large breasts can also cause people to live a more sedentary lifestyle, which can lead to weight gain as well as less physical activity.

Women who have large breasts have been found to be more fertile due to higher levels of the hormone estradiol. This can make it easier to get pregnant, so make sure to practice safe sex if you’re not ready for a baby.

Larger breasts have also been attributed to higher IQ’s in women and they can even keep you warmer during the cold months of the year!

Breasts of All Shapes and Sizes

Whether it’s because of a biological response or a learned preference, guys just like breasts. They really do. And as long as their appreciation doesn’t cause any trouble, this is a good thing.

Unfortunately though, not every woman has breasts she likes. If you’re unhappy with your breasts, you don’t have to be stuck with them forever. Breast augmentation can provide you with the breasts of your dreams, as long as you choose the right surgeon. travel plastic surgery tourism

Why Do People Travel Out of the Country for Plastic Surgery? And Should You?

With the boom in plastic surgery procedures being performed all over the world, it’s no surprise that prices have also continued to go up. Between surgeons investing in new technologies and equipment, as well as continuing education and staff, the price of a plastic surgery procedure in the United States may seem a little out of reach when compared to other countries.

Because of this we’ve seen an uptick in patients considering traveling out of the United States to seek better prices on procedures. Plastic Surgery Tourism has become extremely popular as of late, but there are a few things to consider before buying that plane ticket.

Plastic Surgery Tourism

Countries like Mexico, India, Turkey, Thailand, and Brazil currently rank amongst the highest countries for plastic surgery tourism. These countries offer a variety of packages and price points that may seem hard to beat when it comes to plastic surgery, but it’s important to do your research before planning one of these trips.

Pricing

One of the main reasons that people travel for plastic surgery procedures is due to the cost of certain procedures in the United States.

Because the cost of education, training, and equipment in the U.S., the surgical prices tend to reflect those costs which makes them a little more expensive. In addition to that, the cost of living is higher here, which means people are willing to spend a little more money, thus the doctors can charge more.

While you may be enticed by the cheapest pricing, you also need to be aware of what you’re getting for that price. The training that doctors receive in some of these countries may not be held to as high of standards as here in the United States, and they may not come out of fully accredited medical schools.

That’s not to say that all doctors performing these procedures in foreign countries are going to be bad, it just means that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Vetting your doctor and the practice is extremely important when considering traveling for plastic surgery. Knowing the doctor’s medical history, accreditations, as well as talking to previous patients, are all things you should do before considering traveling for plastic surgery.

If you find a doctor charging $1000 for something that a local doctor is charging $5000, that should be an immediate red flag, or at least a sign that you need to do your research.

Procedures Unavailable in the U.S.

One of the other reasons that patients travel out of the United States is to seek out procedures that doctors won’t perform here.

With celebrity culture these days we hear a lot about different types of plastic surgery procedures and people going under the knife all the time, but what a lot of people don’t know is that not all procedures are allowed to be performed in the United States.

Because of this, people will travel out of the country to find a doctor that is willing to perform the surgery since they may not be held to the same regulations and requirements as U.S. surgeons.

And while it may seem like a red flag if the United States won’t allow certain procedures to be performed, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad, or the surgeons performing them are bad, it just means that through our strict approval process, the medical boards here have deemed certain procedures, or methods by which to perform them, unsafe or not researched enough.

The same goes for medicinal drugs and other forms of treatments. Some countries are more relaxed when it comes to allowing certain treatments to be used on humans, whereas the United States has stated that they haven’t gone through enough testing or gotten the proper approvals to be put into practice here.

Technology

In some cases, purchasing or acquiring certain technology in the United States may be more expensive than acquiring it in a foreign country. This, again, can be due to the regulations that the U.S. places on medical equipment as well as the cost to import things here that were produced elsewhere.

For example, Turkey has a very high rate of surgical tourism for men’s hair transplants because most of the clinics in Turkey utilize a more modern technique than those in the United States. And while there are more and more U.S. clinics moving over to the robot assisted FUE method of hair transplant here, a lot of them still utilize the old FUT strip method since the technology is still rather expensive. And because the technology needed to perform that method of transplant is so expensive, it means that pricing here in the states is going to be higher as well.

Should You Travel to a Foreign Country for Plastic Surgery?

Since we are based in the United States we’re obviously going to try and convince you that staying stateside is a better option than traveling overseas, or down south, for a medical procedure of any kind, especially a non-life saving one. But of course we understand that people like to research all of their options.

Because of this, we can’t stress enough how important it is to do your research before committing to plastic surgery tourism. Make sure you research the doctor, the practice, and all of the costs associated with the entire process.

If you are really considering traveling for a procedure, consider branching out and looking into other doctors and practices within the United States before you venture out to a country you’ve never visited.

We have patients travel to our offices from all over the country for plastic surgery procedures. We offer discounts on hotel accommodations and can help with all the travel arrangements. Dr. Adams is board certified and an expert in his field. He’s developed the 24-hour fast track recovery process that can help you get back to your everyday life as soon as possible.

Traveling for plastic surgery may save you a few bucks in the long run, but be sure to do your research before making a final decision.

stomach sleeping women

Is it Safe for Women to Sleep on their Stomach?

Finding a comfortable position to sleep in can be a challenge in itself, but combine that with large breasts (real or implants) and it can make what should be a simple process, even harder.

We’ve discussed the best ways to sleep after you’ve had breast augmentation in the past, but there are a lot of people out there that have concerns about stomach sleeping in general.

Is sleeping on your stomach bad for you, as a woman? Can sleeping on your stomach cause other health issues like cancer? Does it cause uneven breast sizes?

Even though some questions related to sleep and breast may seem silly, these are genuine concerns of a lot of women.

With the rise of breast cancer around the world, and the focus on health and exercise, many women are doing everything they can to ensure they are keeping their bodies in good shape. Both mental and physical health are extremely important when it comes to helping the body heal and helping us to enjoy life in a desirable way.

The way you sleep could be having negative effects on your breasts, but not all doctors are convinced.

Sleeping and Breast Health

Does Stomach Sleeping Cause Breasts to Sag?

In a previous article we covered various habits that you may not realize are causing your breasts to sag and side-sleeping and stomach sleeping were one of these habits.

While Dr Adams himself does not believe that sleeping on your side or your stomach is causing enough damage to be the sole cause of sagging breasts, the idea stems from the lack of support and lack of blood flow that can come from these two sleeping positions.

While sleeping on your side the ligaments in your breasts can stretch as there isn’t as much support. Over time as these ligaments continue to be stretched overnight, they can lose their elasticity which is what is believed to cause the breasts to start sagging.

Sleeping on your stomach can compress the breasts, which can slow down the blood flow to the area. This may also change the shape of your breasts overtime, but the full extent of the damage is probably negligible, if at all.

Does Stomach Sleeping Cause Breast Cancer?

As we mentioned above, sleeping on your stomach can cause more pressure to be put on your breasts, which in turn can cause lower blood flow to the areas, but can this cause breast cancer?

No.

Sleeping on your stomach, putting pressure on your breasts, or even falling and injuring your breasts, do not increase your likelihood of developing breast cancer.

Falling, pinching, or pressing hard against your breast will most likely just cause a bruise that will heal itself in a few days, but it will not cause breast cancer to start forming.

In some cases, injury to the breast can also cause a lump or cyst to form, however these lumps are known as fat necrosis and are not cancerous. Fat necrosis is scar tissue from where the breast healed itself after an injury.

Your sleeping position is not going to increase or decrease your risk of breast cancer.

Does Stomach Sleeping Cause Uneven Breasts?

Uneven breasts are a concern of a lot of women. It can make you feel self-conscious and it can make it hard to wear certain types of clothing.

The same idea applies here as it did above with sagging breasts and stomach sleeping. By sleeping on your stomach, you are reducing the amount of blood flow to the breasts, while also stretching out the ligaments that help keep them in position.

If those ligaments stretch too much for long periods of time, they begin to lose elasticity and once they lose their ability to retain their original shape, this can lead to shape issues.

Sleeping on your stomach for extended periods of time, night after night, for years, may lead to the development of slightly uneven breasts. If you’re looking to maintain your breasts and are concerned about the possibility of them becoming slightly uneven or sagging (which is unfortunately bound to happen as you age due to the way the body works and gravity), then sleeping on your back would be the best option for you.

Should I Change the Way I Sleep to Help My Breasts?

Dr. Adams believes that getting enough good sleep at night is more important than worrying about what position you’re sleeping in. Allowing your body to rest and properly repair itself will allow you to look and feel your best each day.

The minor benefits you may see from sleeping on your back as opposed to on your stomach or your side are not worth it if you’re going to be uncomfortable or unable to get a good night sleep. And, once you’re asleep we tend to move around subconsciously. So while you may start off sleeping on your back, you’re very likely to end up spending most of your time on your side or your stomach as the night progresses.

It’s not worth losing sleep over.
