The patient to the left was treated with Botox. Notice how the lines and wrinkles in her forehead have completely disappeared! She looks at least 10 years younger due to her smooth wrinkle-free skin.

The patient to the right was treated one time with Voluma, a midface filling/ lifting product. Injectable fillers are used to restore volume in the facial region. They are often used in conjunction with Botox to give a more youthful look and appearance.

Botox

Botox is created from the Botulinum toxin. A specialized medical laboratory renders the toxin 100% safe. It is a completely natural (no chemicals added) purified protein that’s used to relax muscles in the face that cause wrinkles and lines.

Botox can also be used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions such as gummy smiles, TMJ, and excessive sweating. Botox is a brand name – there are many similar products on the marketing, but Botox is the most widely known, used, and studied. It’s FDA-approved and certified in both the cosmetic and medical realms.

What Do Botox Injections Involve?

The doctor or nurse will swab your skin gently with an alcohol pad to remove any dirt or oils from your face. They will then use their medical expertise to strategically inject certain areas with a fine sterile needle that contains Botox. The amount of injections required varies from person to person, and from male to female. Generally speaking, males require more injections due to their faces containing more wrinkles than females.

Botox goes to work almost immediately once it’s injected. However, it can take several weeks to several months before you notice the full results. You will be able to enjoy your new wrinkle-free face for many months to come. As time goes by, your body will naturally absorb the Botox and safely process and eliminate it. Once the Botox is completely out of your system, the wrinkles will return, and you will need to get another treatment.

Cost of Botox

The overall cost of Botox will vary from patient to patient. Botox is sold by the unit and men tend to require more units than women. A general price range can go from a few hundred dollars all the way up to a thousand or more if used in conjunction with dermal fillers. It’s strongly advised you only get Botox from a licensed medical professional. While Botox itself is completely safe, complications can arise if injected into the wrong area of the face. This is why it’s so important that you visit a licensed medical clinic – they are insured and have the medical expertise of human facial anatomy to safely administer Botox and injectables.

Recovery & Pain

Due to Botox being non-surgical, there is no recovery time. Once you leave the medical clinic, you are free to resume your normal daily activities. There is some pain associated with Botox. Since your facial area is being injected with a fine sterile needle, you will feel each needle prick. While each person’s pain tolerance is different, most people find the needle pricks to be tolerable and describe them as a “gentle pinch”.

Dermal Fillers

As your body ages, it loses the natural elastin and collagen that are responsible for a youthful looking face. Your cells start to become less able to produce more of the stuff that’s responsible for tight, youthful-looking skin. Your skin will start to become thinner, dryer, and less able to repair itself.

As time goes by, your body will also start to lose the ability to manufacture Hyaluronic Acid (HA) which will leave your skin less well supported and encourage the onset of lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers lift and smooth folds and wrinkles by adding subtle volume. The end result being a more noticeable, youthful, and fresher look to your face.

What Do Filler Injections Involve?

This treatment involves injecting naturally occurring Hyaluronic Acid into your face in much the same way as Botox is administered. The overall treatment process lasts only a few minutes and the results are immediately noticeable.

There are other brand name fillers that use components other than Hyaluronic Acid to treat wrinkles and give you face a more youthful, fuller appearance. Calcium Hydroxyapatite, Poly-L-lactic Acid and Polymethylmethacrylate are all used in various fillers. It’s best to ask your doctor which one is right for the results you’re looking to achieve.

Cost of Dermal Fillers

The average cost of dermal fillers will vary according to the type (brand name) and amount of filler that’s being used. It’s advisable to stay away from “beauty salons” or Groupon discounts. Most of the time the injections will not be performed in an actual medical office by a licensed medical professional. Plastic surgery offices are the best and safest place to get Botox and dermal filler treatments.

Recovery & Pain

Dermal fillers usually last longer than Botox – in most cases you will continue to see beneficial results for upwards of 1 year after your treatment. Because your face is being injected with a fine needle, you may notice a small “pinch” with each injection. While each person’s pain tolerance is different, most people find it to be completely bearable.

There is no recovery – you can resume your normal daily activities after getting your dermal filler injections.
