7 Things to Do In Dallas This Fall

dallas texas fall

Can you feel it? As summer temperatures break and the hint of a cool breeze whips our face, it’s finally time for autumn in Dallas. We may not get the bursting tree colors of New England but honestly, who needs them? We’d rather enjoy our eclectic city without the overcoats or snowstorms.

Free concerts. Food tours. Them Cowboys. There’s simply so much love about this time of year in DFW indoors and out. Here are our 7 favorite things to do in Dallas this fall.

1. Texas State Fair

Texas Discovery Gardens

Sep 28, 2018 — Oct 22, 2018

BigTex.com

Howdy there, Big Tex! Nothing kicks off the season like the opening of the State Fair of Texas. With over 2.25 million annual visitors in 2017, it’s the largest state fair in the nation and a true Texas can’t-miss.

Get up-close and personal with cows, chickens, and goats galore at the livestock exhibitions. Indulge in treats like cotton candy tacos or bacon brittle. Get classy at the State Fair Wine Garden. And don’t miss out on some incredible FREE musical performances by Ludacris, Hunter Hayes, Banda Carnaval, and more.

2. Autumn at the Arboretum

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

Sept. 21 — Nov. 21, 2018

Another unforgettable fall time tradition, immerse yourself in the breathtaking Autumn at the ArboretumFodor’s Travel even named it one of “America’s Best Pumpkin Festivals.” With a theme of “The Adventures in Neverland,” transport you and your family to a land far away and explore this creative world filled with over 90,000 pumpkins.

And don’t miss out on all of the fantastic fall events going on at the Arboretum. The Live Music Series happens every Saturday and Sunday until November 25th. Or get creepy during Halloween Week with fun events like trick-or-treating, the Spooky Maze Scavenger Hunt, and so much more.

3. Dallas Bike Ride

Riding bikes in November without fear of frostbite is just one more reason we seriously love our city. The Dallas Bike Ride takes full advantage of our fall weather as city streets shut down to allow riders of all ages and skill levels to enjoy Dallas from an entirely new perspective.

So hop on your noble, metal steed and hit the streets in this “celebration of bicycling in Dallas.” After soaking up 20 miles of gorgeous skyline views, finish the course in front of City Hall for festivities dedicated to the love of cycling.

4. Root for the Home Team

Baseball season might be wrapping up for the Rangers, but for plenty of other teams things are just heating up. We’re not only talking about our beloved Dallas Cowboys. Here in Dallas-Ft.Worth, we’re proud to call dozens of teams our own—and fall is the perfect time to cheer them on.

Enjoy a night on the ice with the Dallas Stars right downtown, or head over to Ft. Worth for college sports action as the TCU Horned Toads take on the rest of the Big 12 in football and basketball. And if you’re still down after the end of the World Cup, relive the fun with FC Dallas as they battle it out in Frisco.

5. Tacos & Margaritas Tour

All Saturdays & Sundays

Lone Star State residents are famous for countless things—but we’re especially proud of our tacos and margaritas. Still, even the most emphatic fans of these Texan delights can only hit the same spots so many times. Why not mix it up?

That’s why we love the Taco & Margarita Tours by Dallas Bites. Stop at the top taco shops and restaurants in the DFW area while sipping on a variety of delectable margs. Enjoy a night out with someone else doing all the planning as everything’s included from transportation to food and drink. Do book in advance as dates fill up fast.

6. Fall Night Frights

Fall time’s the perfect time to get a little spooky—or full-on frightening! Thankfully, there are TONS of amazing haunted houses in the Dallas area, each offering different ways to get your scream on.

For the traditional yet truly terrifying, check out Moxley Manor in Bedford or Dark Hour Haunted House in Red Oak. If you’re searching for a new way to scream, don’t miss Dallas’ Virtual Haunted House. Using 360 motion tracking, a treadmill, and a 3D VR headset, get dropped into the middle of a zombie apocalypse and try your best to survive this immersive fear-inducing experience.

7. Chefs for Farmers: The Main Event

Dallas Heritage Village
Nov. 3, 2018

The culmination of the 6th Annual Chefs for Farmers festival, experience the best cuisine Dallas has to offer at The Main Event. Featuring talents from the newest names in the local scene to legendary stalwarts like Dean Fearing, John Tesar, and Wolfgang Puck, taste countless delectable bites as you eat and drink your way through beautiful Old City Park.

With a mission to bring together local chefs, foodies, farmers, and producers, this food fest isn’t just about eating. It’s about celebrating everything that makes North Texas cuisine incredible, sustainable, and most importantly—Texan.
