What is it?
Eyelid surgery (technically called blepharoplasty ) is a procedure to remove fat usually along with excess skin and muscle, from the upper and lower eyelids.
What does it accomplish?
Blepharoplasty can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes. These are the features that make you look older and feel more tired than you are, and may even interfere with your vision. However, it will not remove crow's feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows. While it can add an upper crease to Asian eyes, it will not erase evidence of your ethnic or racial heritage. What happens during the first consultation?
During your initial consultation, Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Adams will evaluate your general health, and will explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate. You should also provide any relevant information from your ophthalmologist or the record of your most recent eye exam. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, be sure to bring them along. You will have the opportunity to view pre and post-op pictures, be photographed and discuss with your nurse pre and post-op care. Dr. Adams' assistant, Christy, will give you the total fee, which includes the fees of your surgeon, anesthesia, and hospital. How is it done?
Before surgery Dr. Adams marks the incisions sites, following the natural lines and creases of the upper and lower eyelids. The underlying fat, along with excess skin and muscle, can be removed during your surgery. Sometimes Dr. Adams will chose to do your lower eyelid by making a tiny incision inside the lower eyelid, so the fat can be removed. Dr. Adams will tell you which surgical procedure is the best for you. You will have very fine sutures that will be removed on the fifth day following your surgery.
What can I expect after surgery?
Recovery time:
You will be swollen and bruised for the first 5-10 days following your surgery. You will be given special cold compresses to wear for the first 48 hours after your surgery. You will be required to sleep with your head elevated on 2 pillows that helps to decrease the swelling. Your vision will be blurry for the first week or longer, and is to be expected from your surgery and from the eye ointment you will apply. This ointment is greasy to keep your eyes moist while you sleep. Your eyes will not close shut as they did prior to your surgery, this is normal and may take a few weeks to resolve before your upper and lower lids close. It is very important that you use your eye ointment as directed following your surgery. You must keep your hands away from your eyes and rubbing your eyes is not permitted to prevent injury to your eye and to your incisions. Your surgery can be done on an outpatient basis and you can go home the first day, unless you had other facial surgery that requires you to stay in the hospital overnight. You must make arrangements for someone to drive you home after your surgery, and to have help at home for a few days. You may return to work in 7-10 days depending on the extent of your swelling and vision changes.
How many visits do I have after surgery?
You usually return in 5 days following surgery for suture removal and to address any concerns with your surgeon and nurse. Then you will require follow up visits in 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year.
Am I a good candidate?
Your visit with Dr. Adams will determine if you are a good candidate. If you are in good physical and mental health, and have realistic expectations, you are probably a good candidate. If you are 35 years or older then you may be a good candidate. There will be exceptions with regards to your age if droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family, you may have your surgery at a younger age.
What does the surgery cost?
You will be quoted a price to include your surgeon's, hospital, and anesthesia fees.
How do I pay for surgery?
You will be given an estimate for your surgeon's, hospital, and anesthesia fees. For your convenience the fees will be paid in one sum at least two weeks. Checks, money orders, cash and credit cards can be used for payment.
Are there scars?
Yes. Whenever surgery is performed on your body a scar will result. Your incisions are placed in the natural lines and creases of your eyelids, which will leave nearly invisible scars.
Does it hurt?
(1) You will have plenty of pain medications for discomfort after your surgery. Please tell us of all your drug allergies. Some pain medications may cause nausea this should not be considered an allergy. All pain medication will cause drowsiness and therefore you should not drive yourself and or operate equipment.
(2) An antibiotic is used for only a few days after your surgery.
(3) Sometimes following surgery to help decrease swelling your surgeon may prescribe Medrol dose-pack.
Will I be awake during surgery?
Blepharoplasty is best done under general anesthesia for control of pain and nausea if they develop post surgery. Dr. Adams will also consider doing your surgery under a light anesthesia along with a local anesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery you require.
Where is the surgery performed?
Your surgery is performed in an outpatient surgery center with no over night stay. There may be an exception that requires an over night stay in the hospital and Dr. Adams will decide based on the extent of your surgery required.
Are medical photographs taken?
Photographs are taken after your first visit for your surgeon and then after your surgery at about 3 months. Medical photographs are essential to help Dr. Adams better assess your eyes and face to assist in planning your surgery.
What medications should I avoid?
You should avoid or be off all diet or over the counter weight medications. The only homeopathic medications are those recommended by Dr. Adams. It is especially important to be off St. John's Wort and Ginseng, which can cause adverse effects during anesthesia. Please stop taking all aspirin-like products, Advil, and ibuprofen as these medications can cause bleeding problems.
