Many women experience emotional benefits from breast augmentation such as enhanced self-esteem, a more satisfying body image and a renewed sense of enthusiasm. No two patients are the same, thus Dr. Adams will individualize your breast augmentation for you and your body. There is no one implant-type or type of augmentation that is best for all patients, Just like there is not one type of house or car that best suit everyone. The key is to match the correct implant to each patient's breast dimensions and soft tissues. This philosophy strives to produce long-term results with low re-operation and complication rates. Dr. Adams does this individual analysis on every patient.
Dr. Adams believes that recovery post-surgery and re-operation rates are the most important factors correlating to the quality of the procedure. Though breast augmentation can achieve many different goals, your decision/ desires are a very personal matter and will be a focus of your visit with Dr. Adams during your consultation. It is important to get all your questions answered during this consultation so it is suggested that you write your important questions down for Dr. Adams to answer. Pre-operative/2 year Post-operative Example What is breast augmentation? An outpatient operation that improves and increases the size and shape of your breast by inserting a Saline (salt- water) implant. What does it accomplish? It enhances the breast size and contour, and may give your body a more harmonious balance. It can also correct and dramatically improve breast/body proportion and balance after pregnancy. ABOUT BREAST ANATOMY The breast is composed of fatty, glandular and fibrous tissues. Within the breasts are blood vessels, milk ducts, fat glands and sensory nerves, and beneath it is a large muscle called the pectoralis major. The size and shape of women's breasts vary greatly and may be affected by factors such as age, past pregnancies, genetics and skin elasticity. Some women have a variation in size or shape from right to left which is called asymmetry. Most saline implants are placed below the pectoralis major while the silicone implants can be placed above or below the muscle. What happens during the first consultation?

Dr. Adams prefers to do breast augmentation in the outpatient surgery center using a board certified anesthesiologist. Although there are cheaper methods and places to do this type of surgery, Dr. Adams feels that patient safety is of utmost importance and this is best provided in this setting. Furthermore, this optimizes patient comfort and allows Dr. Adams to give you your best result. The method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your chest size and shape and Dr. Adams' recommendation. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest (breast fold) or around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the axilla (armpit). Every effort will be made to assure that the incision is placed so resulting scars will be as small as possible. Working through the incision, Dr. Adams will lift your breast tissue (using only precise dissection and no blunt dissection to minimize post-operative pain and edema) to make a pocket, either directly behind your breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle (the pectoral muscle). The implants are then centered beneath your nipples. Dr. Adams does not use drains for breast augmentation. What can I expect after surgery? Dr. Adams' patients can return to baseline activities of daily living after breast augmentation usually by 24 hours. Dr. Adams performs several specialized maneuvers to minimize your post-operative pain. In fact, many of Dr. Adams' patients can go shopping or travel 1 or 2 days after surgery without any complications. Your surgery can be done on an outpatient basis and you can go home the same day. At home, you will need someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours. A surgical bra with a small piece of gauze on the incisions will be used for the first 2-3 days. Dr. Adams allows you to shower the night of the procedure.. You will be seen for follow-up in 3-4 days, to learn and demonstrate how to massage and exercise your breasts and to have post-op care reinforced. You may return to work in 2-5days with some limitations on physical activity. No lifting over 10 pounds for 3 weeks. No aerobic workouts and increase your heart rate above 100 beats per minute for 3 weeks. Walking may begin after 1 day. Chest/ weight exercises may be resumed 6wks after surgery. Dr Adams uses absorbable sutures that do not require removal. Dr. Adams will be able to provide you with more specific details about the recovery process, and he or she may have other recommendations based on your individual needs. Should any problems occur after your surgery, contact your doctor immediately. This is especially important if you have a high temperature, or if one or both of your breasts are excessively swollen, tender to the touch, painful, red or inflamed. How many visits after surgery? You usually return in 3-5 days following surgery, then at 2 weeks. This routine can be modified for out of town patients. During your post-op visits, Dr. Adams will review exercises you will do to manipulate the implants within the pocket, discuss further postoperative activity and concerns you may have. Following this visit, you will return in approximately 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and one year and then every year thereafter. It is essential to maintain consistent follow-up care.
